Sustainability + Development Program

Key Features of S+DP Degrees
Creative Design Thinking
Approaching global development through the prism of a sustainable vision, SMU’s MASD program is focused on creative approaches to the design and development of the built environment. This includes energy, natural resources, landscape, transportation, buildings, and infrastructure systems.
DFW As Our Sitelab
Fully project-based, the MASD program takes advantage of its location in the DFW metroplex to engage with local professionals and government agencies both within the classroom and on site projects, focusing on smart urban solutions.
Resilient Urban Infrastructure
Our multidisciplinary approach embeds environmental science and design within the context of global development, urban planning, energy, transportation, infrastructure, and sustainable construction. These approaches are supported by our alignment with the Hunt Institute for Engineering & Humanity and the Deason Innovation Gym (DIG).
Global Vision
Site-based work engages students to participate in sustainable re-visioning both locally and globally, seeking strategies to counterbalance long-term trends toward environmental inequality and spatial fragmentation.
